Status of International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility project

Nakamura, Hiroo

The IFMIF is an accelerator-based Deuterium-Lithium (Li) neutron source for development of fusion materials. The IFMIF is a joint effort of the European Union (EU), Japan, the Russian Federation (RF), and the United States of America (USA) within the framework of the Fusion Materials Implementing Agreement of the International Energy Agency (IEA). The "Key Element Technology Phase" (KEP) during 2000-2002 was carried out with the objectives of verifying relevant component designs on a laboratory scale and of validating design codes. Now, the Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activity (EVEDA) is planned to start in 2007 under a part of Broader Approach by EU and Japan. The primary mission of the IFMIF will be to generate a materials irradiation database for the design, construction, licensing and safe operation of DEMO. This will be achieved through testing and qualifying materials performance under neutron irradiation that simulates fusion reactor service up to the full lifetime of anticipated service in DEMO. Tests of blanket elements will be an important use of the facility, and will complement the tests of blanket test modules in ITER. This report presents a brief summary of latest activities of the IFMIF project and the EVEDA.
